Howe Quad

Firehouse expanded to house the future addition of the 1966 Howe Quad ladder truck

Junior Dpt

Established the Junior Fire Department for 16-18 yr olds

Upstairs Expansion

The upstairs was expanded over the 1962 bay extension

1970
SCBA

Bought the first set of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

1980
Modern Turnout Gear

Transitioned to “modern” bunker gear (coats and pants) from ¾ pull up boots and long rubber coats

1986
75th Anniversary

HPFD celebrated its 75th Anniversary

1988
PASS Alarms

HPFD became one of the first area departments to adopt personal alert safety system (PASS) alarms to be worn by all firefighters

1990
NYC Anniversary Parade

HPFD joined with the Tenafly FD to march together in the 125th Anniversary parade of the FDNY in NYC

1990
Aerial apparatus

The firehouse was expanded again to house the first Aerial apparatus, which arrived in 1994

2001
9/11

Crews assisted with recovery efforts at Ground Zero following 9/11 attacks

2006 – PRESENT
DHS FEMA grants

Department began applying for and awarded DHS FEMA grants for the fire service, including:

  • AFG Grant: Backup generator for the firehouse
  • AFG Grant: Vehicle exhaust ventilation system
  • AFG Grant: Turnout gear washer and dry
  • AFG Grant: SCBA replacement
  • SAFER Grant: Develop and implement a recruitment and retention program

100th Anniversary

HPFD celebrated its 100th Anniversary with a joint parade with the Norwood Fire Department

2012
Renovation

The floors of the original apparatus bay were dug up and lowered to accommodate the size of modern apparatus

2012
Superstorm Sandy

Crews traveled to Breezy Point, NY to assist with recovery efforts after Superstorm Sandy

2021
New Rescue Boat

HPFD was awarded a matching grant from the 200 Club of Bergen County to purchase a new rescue boat

2023 – 2024
New Gear

HPFD was awarded  2 grants from the State of New Jersey through the American Rescue Plan to purchase new turn out gear

2023
Aid Plans

The HPFD was a lead agency, along with the Closter, Demarest, Haworth, Northvale, Norwood, and Rockleigh Fire Departments, in developing and implementing automatic aid plans within Northern Valley to more adequately and immediately staff incidents with high-hazard conditions.

2024
Stipend Program

With funding from a SAFER grant, the Department instituted its first stipend program.
